Big or small, your closet is one of the most important spaces in your room. Often just made up of a single rod, it takes a little imagination and ingenuity to make it into an area that will work for you...without dropping a ton of money on a professional installation. Lucky for you, we're chock full of imagination and ingenuity (blame it on years of small-space living), and we've got eight easy, affordable tips that'll take your closet from disorderly to streamlined.
1. Stick to One Space
Keep all of your clothes and shoes in the same area space. That way, you're not running between the hallway and your closet trying to figure out whether the green flats or the peach peep-toes go better with your floral dress. If you have a small chest of drawers and some floor space in your closet, throw it in there and load it up with activewear, underthings, pajamas, and bulky sweaters. Hint: Cute labels help resist the temptation to just chuck everything into one drawer. If you don't have a chest of drawers or your space is too small, grab a couple of colorful crates or storage boxes and stack them facing out for an impromptu dresser tower.
2. Organize Your Drawers
Make your catchall drawer of underwear, bras, and socks easier to deal with by cutting foamboard in custom sizes. They're great for organizing clothing as well as separating out black tights from, say, those very similar-looking navy blue ones (oops).
3. Add Structure
Think about how you can maximize every inch of space in your closet. If you have a big gap between your closet rod and the ceiling, throw up a tension rod above the built-in one. Even if there's not a ton of vertical space between the two, the higher rod can at least hold shorter items, such as jackets, skirts, and out-of-season tops. Or, if you're on a rod-only basis and not a lot else to work with, pick up some of those hanging sweater organizers and use them for anything from tees to sweats to jeans.
4. Get Your Shoes in Order
As gorgeous as your collection is, it might not be practical to have them all out on display if you're tight on space. Out-of-season or infrequently worn shoes can pop into a drawer or other out-of-the-way place like a high shelf or under the bed. Also, if you've moved your dresser into the closet, the top of it can act as a shoe shelf for your most-worn pairs. If you're dresser-less, grab an extra box or crate while you're at Target. You can hang your heels around the top to face out, and pile your flats inside.
5. Put Your Selfie Skills to Work
You know those miraculous moments when you put together an outfit that makes you look and feel great? Record 'em! Take a quick selfie, print it out, and you can even write little notes on it like "Date Night" or "Job Interview." Pin it up on your wall, and the next time you feel like you have "nothing to wear," you'll have a whole wall o' inspiration to help you out.
6. Buy the Right Hangers
All hangers are not created equal, so you should look for a variety of styles depending on what you want to hang. If you're tight on rod space, go for tiered versions that can take on two or three skirts or use multi-hook hangers to help streamline bulky shirts. Aside from regular single-item storage, you can also use traditional hangers to keep your belt collection in check—just slide the buckles over the top hook and hang.
7. Put 3M Command Hooks Everywhere
If you have some extra wall space, start sticking! You can use them for your bathrobe, trench coat, handbags, cardis, scarves, hats...you get the picture.
8. Organize Your Clothes
If aesthetics are important to you (or you tend to be matchy-matchy), you can color code your racks. If you're more of a mix-and-match kind of girl, group your clothing by type (shirts, skirts, trousers, dresses, etc.) to make grab-and-go easier. Once or twice a season, try to shake up the order of things—you'll be surprised how it triggers different outfit ideas!
