Blue Light Technology to cure acne

All too often, treating acne is a one step forward, two steps back scenario. Because of the super-strength ingredients in many complexion-clearing products, you can actually end up exacerbating your breakouts, especially if you have sensitive skin. That's why we're so taken with the latest advancement in acne-eradicating technology: blue light therapy.

The treatment is just what it sounds like. Dermatologists expose acne-prone skin to a device that emits a blue light. "Blue light therapy uses the light of one particular blue wavelength that is effective in treating acne," says Dr. Melanie Grossman, a NYC-based board-certified dermatologist. "It's been shown to kill bacteria associated with breakouts." As such, blue light therapy does what topical treatments often can't—attack acne at its source.
And did we mention it's far gentler than your typical breakout-busters, too? Since the treatment is completely powered by light, it's far less irritating than other procedures (yes, we're talking about you, ouch-worthy, eye-watering, wince-inducing extractions!).
But as the saying goes, no pain, no gain: "The blue light helps to diminish acne bacteria while physical extractions manually remove blackheads," says Dr. Grossman. "These treatments can work synergistically to improve acne." In fact, many dermatologists administer blue light therapy in conjunction with extractions through a medical-grade facial called HydraFacial MD. "It acts as both a physical and chemical peel while nourishing and hydrating skin, ridding it of dirt and dead skin cells," says Dr. Grossman, who sees best results with patients receiving the facials once a month. Frequent treatment is possible since the side effects are minimal—meaning even those with young, hot-tempered skin are prime candidates for the HydraFacial MD.
