Cheap ideas to decorate your first apartment

Moving into the first place you can truly call your own—be it a dorm or studio apartment—is super exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming. Should you paint? What should you buy? Where should you even begin?! These are all questions probably running through your mind—not to mention how to stretch what might be a tight budget and turn it into something truly chic. Luckily, taking a little money and turning it into a lot of style is easily accomplished (hint: it's all about the little things). We chose these five decor items to help turn blah digs into an awesomely accessorized pad:

1. Window treatments. There's nothing more depressing than a set of aluminum mini blinds, so instead of relying on those to keep your neighbors from seeing you in the nude, invest in shades that suit your style personality. We love these inexpensive, stick-on paper shades  that will help create privacy while still giving your windows a sleek look (plus still letting some light through), but a gorgeous tapestry that you hang like curtains is also a good way to go.
2. Next level linens. Here's the deal: Your bed isn't just the place where you crash out every night, it's the spot in your home you see first when you open your eyes—and for that reason, it should be beautiful.
4. Get your art on. No, you're probably not at the point where you're investing in artwork (although at some point we'd definitely encourage you to do). But your blank walls are definitely in need of some beautifying, and you don't have to drop a ton of dough to do it. You can find awesome, already framed original artwork at unbeatable prices. Not feeling any of that stuff? No worries: Make your own, and then buy an inexpensive gallery frame kit to display your oeuvre.
5. The right rug. Whether you've got linoleum, icky tile, or even carpeting you'd rather cover up, adding a rug to your new space will help truly make it your own. The problem? A lot of the time, rugs can be really expensive, and buying them secondhand comes with its own set of problems. For that reason, we're going to give you some shopping tips: Seek out flat-weave, printed textiles that won't shed or show stains—that will help the rug to last you longer so you can feel better about spending more since you won't be replacing it for a long while.
