Fashion rules you should break

There are certain rules in fashion that should never, everbe broken. Wearing leggings as pants is one of them.
But as the old adage goes, some rule are meant to be broken, and many more can at least be bent a little. Whenever someone says “that doesn’t look good on you,” what they’re really saying is “that wouldn’t look good on me, and I’m gonna project my annoyance.” With this in mind, let’s take a look at the most popular no-nos every woman gets drilled into her from an early age that are well worth ignoring…

10 Fashion Rules You Should Break

1. You Can’t Wear White After Labor Day

This is a fashion rule we’ve all heard before, but it’s also one of those fashion rules you should break without fear of recrimination.
Although nobody can quite decide on where the ‘no white after Labor Day’ rule originated (or why), it’s now widely considered to be a tradition that’s had its day. If you need any proof of this, see any Winter catwalk show or any September issue of a fashion magazine and you’ll see that white is actually quite prominent at that time of year.
On the other end of the spectrum is another of one of the often-shared fashion rules you should break anytime you please:

2. You Shouldn’t Wear All Black (Unless You’re Going to a Funeral)

While there are right and wrong ways to wear an all-black outfit, there’s nothinginherently wrong in doing so. In addition, it can be a lot less dowdy and depressing than you might at first imagine

3. You Should Never Mix Prints

The pros do it all the time, so why can’t you? The answer is pretty simple: you can.
It’s one of the most fun aspects of street style that you can experiment with, and you’ll often come up with some combinations that work surprisingly well if you’re willing to play around a little. Animal prints are ripe for the mixing, and floral prints are very much in for this season, so you’ve got plenty of options to work with.

4. You Should Always Dress Your Age

Says who? The jealous wannabes who can’t handle the fact that you look amazing in that backless, sparkly dress even though you’re pushing 60 (or 90)?
Forget those guys. Obviously there are a few limits to this – nobody beyond their teens (or arguably anyone) should try to get away with Juicy sweatpants – but we’re talking about very few, super extreme examples here. There’s no such thing as age-appropriate dress if you follow the overarching rule of ‘if it looks good on you, wear it.’
On a similar note…

5. Your Hems Should Lower as Your Age Rises

Again, who comes up with this nonsense?
I suspect this is one of those hangovers from the uber-conservative 40s and 50s in which anything above the knee would send the townsfolk into hysteria. Thankfully, we live in far more liberal times. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ve probably got luscious long legs and it’s widely considered to be a crime to cover them up (whatever your age).

7. Tall Women Can’t Wear High Heels

This is one we’ve covered quite often right here on this blog and on our Facebook page, so I won’t repeat myself here… but still, it’s total garbage. Wear those heels.
