New Pant Length Is Kicky, Short, and Totally Stylish... Fashion for Next Season ;)

Looking good in your trousers shouldn’t be rocket science. But whether it’s bell-bottoms or skinnies, flares or boot-cut, sometimes these things conspire against your particular person—whether that means your body shape or your state of mind. (Transitioning from the ubiquitous skinny jean to fashion’s favored wider cut—and the tide is turning!—has proved to be a slow, dramatic shift; one we encourage, of course, but one that requires a certain willingness for change.) And in the case of the new pant—kicky, often (but not always) lean, and cut significantly above the ankle, as seen on the spring runways and pre-fall presentations from Chanel, Miu Miu, Thom Browne, and The Row—it’s easy to feel like you’re in over your head.

There’s an expression about being in short pants to convey youth and lack of guile, after all, but forget about that: Kick up those heels and think of screen icons from Audrey Hepburn to Lauren Bacall and that other fabulous Hepburn, Katharine, and style setters and ingenues like Jean Shrimpton, Jackie O, and Grace Kelly—they all wore this pant with aplomb. So fear not: Here are the keys to looking good in your pants, as handed down from Vogue.com Market Editor Kelly Connor, who is leggier than anything, often cites a favorite “awkward crop” as her preferred trouser silhouette, and has been unwittingly convincing the Vogue office into short(er) pants since she first stepped out in them, simply by association. (And such is the joy of the new pant: You immediately look both totally cool and incredibly fresh.)
1. Hem, if necessary: “The crop should be intentional-looking,” says Connor, and it should hit at the skinniest part of your ankle for the most flattering silhouette.
2. A good heel does wonders—the season’s blocky mid-heels, especially—“They allow for a severe shoe if you want but also look adorable with a sneaker,” notes Connor, and the pant works with everything from flats and pumps to brogues.
3. Show off your boots! A tall fitted ankle boot creates a beautiful silhouette, and if the pants are looser-fitting you can even wear them with a knee-high pair. Also, notes Connor, worry no more about that “usual awkward ‘can I tuck these jeans into my boots without making my legs look twice as large’—the dilemma is solved.”
4. Keep your proportions balanced. “A shorter pant can look a little Steve Urkel with a baggy sweater,” says Connor, “try a cropped or fitted jacket.”
5. Have fun with it. The new pant is really the best way to enjoy “any of fall’s yummy textures,” says Connor, from tweeds and suedes to corduroy, denim, and velvet, and, as she notes, “It can go from work to cocktail, too.”
