Fall wardrobe for men

Loathe me to say it, but summer is over. But as the dark nights descend upon us, we can take some solace in the fact that Autum/Winter ’15 is filled with exciting sartorial opportunities that offer a welcome distraction (and protection) from the dreaded temperature drop. However, the new season doesn’t necessarily mean splurging on a whole new wardrobe, as there are many simple and effective ways to transition into the new season by merging some existing summer pieces with key autumnal staples.

Keep it lightweight and layer up! We’re all too familiar with autumn’s less than stable weather conditions. One minute you’re freezing and the next you’re boiling up in your chunky knit and shirt combo. My advice going into the new season is to build on what you already have and add layers in a move that combines practicality and style in equal measure.

Think of long-sleeve polos or Henley shirts and pair them with an open front cardigan (much more stylish and modern than a buttoned one) for a look that’s effortless and can be dressed up or down with some wool-blend trousers or a more casual slim-fit chino. Investing in some fine-knit sweaters is never a bad idea and for AW’15, forest green is the hue du jour and this will look particularly striking against an all-black ensemble.

Shearling is always a safe-bet for the colder months of the year and while it was bigger than ever on the A/W’15 catwalks, in terms of outerwear, for me, a trench coat cannot be beaten – both in terms of versatility and style. The trench coat is something that instantly makes an outfit and whether it’s worn over a suit or more casually with jeans, and a tee, it’s a sure-fire winner. For autumn, update the classic trench with an oversized scarf for a cosy Parisian vibe.

The most important thing to remember upon approaching the new season is not to forget what we’ve left behind. Summer’s key colours, such as the waves of green and blue seen at the likes of JW Anderson and Duchamp, can be carried into autumn and reinterpreted against the backdrop of new-season trends. Paring down some of summer’s bolder hues against more muted autumnal tones makes a striking statement.

Autumn can be a funny one when it comes to dressing and with the unpredictability of our climate, it’s important to take a thoughtful and considered approach into the coming months. Don’t be afraid to drape. As I said, it’s all about layering and juxtaposing different textures and fabrics not only adds a sense of individuality to a look, but it handily allows for the union of practicality and style, resulting in the ideal transition into autumn.
