Tricks for a thin hair

From out-of-control curls to lackluster color, we all have our personal hair frustrations. For me, that issue is volume: I’ve got limp locks that seem to grow thinner with each passing minute. Lucky for me (and for you), there are plenty of ways to fake a fuller mane.

Trick #1: Massage Your Scalp
Exfoliation isn’t just for your complexion. Treating your scalp to a weekly massage clears pores of follicle-blocking sebum. Using your fingertips, apply gentle pressure to your scalp and mimic the motion of squeezing a lime. (Bonus: it feels really good.)
Trick #2: Focus on Your Roots
Before blow-dying hair, prep with a lightweight mousse (it's come a long way since the 80s). Next, use a large rounded brush to pull sections of your hair up from the root, aiming your blow-dryer at your scalp for maximum lift.
Trick #3: Flip and Spritz—the Right Way
We’ve been using the flip-head/comb-hair-forward/mist-with-hairspray/stand-up trick ever since our girl crush on Kelly Kapowski. But it turns out we had the technique wrong: Hair spray takes approximately 30 seconds to dry and set. Let it take hold of the root before you stand upright.
Trick #4: Don't Ignore Your Ends
We learned this quick tip from celeb hairstylist and Birchbox fave, Mike Vogel. After styling your strands, pinch small sections of ends between your thumb and pointer finger and gently rub together in a back and forth motion. This simple move breaks up clumps and separates ends for a fuller look.
Trick #5: Customize Your Shower-Time Essentials
You use face products formulated for your skin type—now it's time to extend that customization to your hair. Unlike traditional shampoos and conditioners, volumizing varieties work to expand the diameter of each individual hair shaft.
Trick #6: See a Dermatologist
From stress to pregnancy, there are countless causes of hair loss. Most fine locks can be chalked up to genetics—thanks, Grandma—but an underlying health condition could potentially be the culprit.
