Learn to Accessorize a Polka Dot Dress

Choose a color to build your accessories around. Typically, it is best to match the color of your accessories to the color of the dots. This keeps things uniform and prevents your accessories from competing with the dress’s pattern. It also makes a bolder statement than matching your accessories to the background color of the dress.

Keep your accessories to a minimum. Since polka dots are such a busy pattern, avoid adding too many accessories to your outfit. Only add two or three accessories, not including your shoes and purse.

Keep accessories as simple as possible. Resist the temptation to use polka dot accessories, and avoid other patterns altogether, since other patterns are likely to clash with the dots. Stick with solid colors.

Wear a belt or sash. A solid colored belt or sash across your waist breaks up the field of dots, adding just enough contrast to keep your look visually interesting without looking cluttered.

Don a hat. A cute, dressy hat plays to the natural girlishness of polka dots. Consider a simple bucket hat or straw sun hat.

Throw a scarf around your neck. A solid colored scarf adds a good amount of contrast to the busy dress pattern. Knot the scarf at the front of your neck and allow the ends to extend down your front.

Wear a simple sweater. Opt for a soft, feminine cardigan or shrug over a military-style jacket or other masculine outerwear.

Simple shoes work best. Low-heeled sandals, closed-toe heels, and flats can all work well with a polka dot dress, but choose a shoe that has little to no adornment.

Wear a bow in your hair. Ribbons and bows are very girly accessories to play with. They coordinate well with polka dots and give your look a playful, innocent twist.

Decorate your neck and wrist with pearls. Pearls coordinate nicely since they match the dot shape. Avoid sparkly jewelry that draws the focus away from the polka dot pattern. Also avoid jewelry with beads that use competing geometric shapes like squares, rectangles, and triangles.

Select your purse or handbag carefully. Any bag with an overwhelming design will appear too daunting with polka dots.

  • If your other accessories are delicate and girlish, opt for a small clutch.
  • If you used your other accessories to add subtle contrast to your attire, consider a larger shoulder bag in a solid color that matches the rest of your accessories.
